The Federal Government has revealed that electricity generation from hydro sources will boost electricity to 19,000 megawatts.
The Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu made this known during the 2018 Seminar on “Construction and Management of Water Conservancy and Hydro-power Projects’’ which was organized by the Chinese Government. Onu, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Bitrus Nabasu, said that the seminar would support government’s renewable energy master plan and further contribute to the development of the country’s power sector.
Responding to the development, Zhao Linxiang, the Economic and Commercial Counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, said that the seminar was the first of its kind to be organized by the government in Nigeria.
Zhao asserted that “Nigeria has a huge potential in hydropower, the only problem is how to make use of the potential. This seminar will focus on power generation, especially hydro-power generation. Nigeria has many hydro-power stations and China is willing to share the technologies we use to contribute to the hydropower sector.”
However, stakeholders believed that if renewables are well utilized, it will complement conventional power institutions in Nigeria. Since the country is being assisted and supported by China, definitely, the impact will soon be felt as the international communities are beginning to show interest in Nigeria’s power institutions.
