Africa's most ambitious energy infrastructure project is moving closer to reality. The Nigeria–Morocco Gas Pipeline — also known as the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline — has dominated boardroom conversations across the continent's energy sector for nearly a decade. Now, with a landmark intergovernmental agreement expected to be signed in Q4 2026, the project is transitioning from vision to verified commitment. The Nigeria–Morocco Gas Pipeline is a proposed $25 billion transcontinental gas infrastructure project designed to transport natural gas from Nigeria's prolific Niger Delta gas fields northward along the West African Atlantic coast, through more than 13 countries, all the way to Morocco — and eventually into European markets.
The pipeline will span approximately 6,900 kilometres along a hybrid offshore-onshore route, making it one of the longest gas pipelines ever proposed anywhere in the world. At full capacity, it will move up to 30 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas annually, with around 15 bcm earmarked for Morocco's domestic consumption and onward export to Europe.
The timing of this pipeline could not be more strategic. Europe has been aggressively diversifying its gas supply sources following major disruptions to its traditional supply lines in recent years. Nigeria, sitting on the world's 9th largest proven gas reserves — now confirmed at 215.19 trillion cubic feet as of January 2026 — is perfectly positioned to fill that gap.
For African energy professionals, the pipeline represents far more than a transit corridor. It is a potential game-changer for regional energy integration, industrialisation, and gas monetisation across West and North Africa.
This is where developments become particularly significant. Nigeria and Morocco are targeting Q4 2026 for the signing of a formal intergovernmental agreement between President Bola Tinubu and King Mohammed VI — a milestone that would follow the completion of preliminary technical studies by both countries' energy authorities.
Nigeria's Foreign Minister, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, confirmed the timeline after a high-level call with her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita. Morocco's state hydrocarbons agency, ONHYM, also disclosed that pre-FEED, FEED Phase 1, and FEED Phase 2 studies have been completed, and that memoranda of understanding are already in place with the 13 transit countries involved.
However, energy analysts are urging professionals to take a realistic view of the delivery timeline. Independent legal and energy experts suggest that despite growing political momentum, the pipeline is unlikely to come onstream before 2031 to 2033 at the earliest.
One of the most remarkable features of this project is its multi-country scope. The pipeline will pass through countries including Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria — before reaching Morocco. ECOWAS formally endorsed the project at its December 2024 summit, adding significant political weight to the initiative.
For energy professionals operating across the region, this opens up opportunities not just in pipeline construction and operations, but also in gas offtake agreements, local content participation, project finance, and downstream gas-to-power development along the corridor.
Both Nigeria and Morocco are using the pipeline framework to broaden economic ties. Discussions between the two foreign ministers have extended to fertiliser production and distribution — a critical priority for food security across Africa. Both sides are also working to re-establish the Nigeria–Morocco Business Council and advance cooperation under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
This signals that for savvy African energy professionals, the pipeline is not just an oil and gas play — it is a platform for broader industrial and commercial opportunities across the continent.
Despite the optimism, professionals should track several risk factors closely:
Financing complexity. At $25 billion, securing project finance across 13+ jurisdictions with varying credit ratings and regulatory environments is an enormous undertaking. Multilateral development finance institutions will be critical.
Geopolitical exposure. A pipeline crossing more than a dozen countries carries significant geopolitical risk. Stable transit agreements and ongoing diplomatic engagement will be essential throughout construction and operations.
Domestic execution pressure. Nigeria's own gas infrastructure — including the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano pipeline and domestic power grid — still needs substantial reform. Analysts argue that Nigeria's credibility as a regional gas leader depends on solving problems at home alongside external ambitions.
Global energy transition. Long-dated fossil fuel infrastructure projects face growing scrutiny from international climate finance institutions. How the pipeline is framed — as a clean energy bridge or a carbon-heavy investment — will influence financing access.
The Nigeria–Morocco Gas Pipeline is the defining infrastructure project of Africa's energy future.
